“I am the gleam on a dragonfly’s wing; I am the pollen the honeybees bring; I am the tamed and I am the wild; I am adventure that calls to the child.”

As late spring moves towards summer, gardens come alive with colour, texture and movement. This is the time when Textile Art really comes into its own because more than many other creative or artistic disciplines, working with fabrics and thread allow you to play with colour, texture and movement. Last week I spent a couple of days on the rugged but beautiful Lleyn Peninsula. My original plan had been to find out more about the Mabinogion – a collection of Welsh folk tales – in the hope of inspiring some Textile Art.

“The day will come when Cynddylan returns and we will go back to our homes and be as happy as the land.”
Happy as the Land
Today’s blog is about how I set about creating the wallhanging that I called ‘Happy as the Land.’ It is an explanation that comes in 3 parts, none of which (at the beginning) will seem related to the others, but I promise you it will make sense at the end. Continue reading Happy as the Land→
Many of the blogs I have written have been about getting started in art and craft. From doodles to sourcing wool and from working through design concepts to making felt. Eventually though, an idea will grow and form, then eventually be ready to go public. Last Wednesday, The Bryngarw Keepers project was officially launched at Bryngarw Country Park .
So there I was, in Greenweeds’ (www.greenweeds.co.uk) studio in Aberystwyth, with a Groovi Felting Machine and a load of Merino Batts. Could I fail to make some fabulous felt? Indeed, if the Groovi Felting Machine lived up to its hype, would I have to do anything at all apart from drink coffee, eat cakes and watch it perform miracles? Continue reading All is Groovi→
When it comes to making felt, slowing down isn’t really an option. It is -usually – laborious, elbow-aching and monotonous. For someone like me who managed to break both arms and chip an Olecranon (little bone in the elbow joint) a couple of years ago, making felt veers between painful and downright impossible. Continue reading Feelin’ Groovi→
How did your doodling go? Doodling is a bit like using free writing to just let ideas spill onto the page. Without the constraints of worrying whether the end result is going to be fit for public consumption, your creative mind can start to have fun. I started my doodles last week by splashing watercolour paints across white card. I didn’t worry about the colours I was using, although it has to be said that I generally stick to a very muted palette anyway. Continue reading Old Man River→
It doesn’t matter what sort of art or craft you are doing, getting the first idea is the hardest part. Sometimes, rather than stare into space for hours waiting for the muse to strike, you can let someone else do the hard work for you. Continue reading Do a doodle→
