Also called Slow Stitched Poetic Maps, these frayed, dyed and embroidered rags interpret and illustrate metaphysical features of landscape. They involve locating liminal or thin places and creating art within that space without being constricted by time – either real or imagined. Often the starting point for these pieces are photographs or field sketches but I also use conventional maps, local history research and site visits. Fabric is dyed using indigenous dyes and poetic snatches are recorded to be printed onto the base material at some point. These words are partially or wholly buried in embroidery stitches to suggest the way in which the land hides its history and its self beneath layers of archaeology.
